If you have ever thought about building a model railway as a great hobby, but were not sure how to get started, read on. Model railways have been a popular hobby with both adults and children for many years, and were particularly popular in the 1950’s. It is with good reason.
Building model railways involves many different skills and activities from painting to planning out the railway to actually working on switching and running the train. It is a hobby that requires a good deal of technical know-how and for this reason many people do not ever consider getting started. It is not a difficult hobby to begin.
One way to get started with model trains if you have little or no expertise is to purchase a model train kit. Model train kits are great for beginners because they have all the pieces together, in the correct scale, and provide instructions and tips for getting started. Before you purchase a model train kit, however, you will need to do a bit of research as to what type will be best for you. First of all, you will probably want to read a bit about train sets. You can find lots of reviews of the various types, both online and in publications devoted to model railways. Looking at a hobby or specialty toy store will also give you some idea of what is out there.
One of the most important decisions that you will have to make before you purchase a set is what scale you want to work in. Model train sets are available in a range of size scales. You will need to consider how much room you have for the set, for one thing. Additionally, larger scale trains will be easier for small children to work with, as they don’t have tiny parts to manipulate. Conversely, some people prefer smaller trains as they allow more elaborate railway setups to be made in less room. Letters indicate model train sizes/scales. From largest to smallest these letters are O, S, HO and TT. The most popular and commonly found size for model trains is HO. Some hobbyists also work in ‘z’ scale. These trains are extremely small and in most cases are only appropriate for those with extensive model train experience.
After you have decided what scale you want to work in, you will need to find a place in your house to set up your railway. You can build or buy a table to work on. Be certain that you have enough room to comfortably get around the table from every angle. Complete model train kits are wonderful in that you can have your train running relatively quickly, but they do generally lack the accessories that can make building a model railway so much fun, such as scenery and additional train cars. Once you have set up your kit, you will be able to see what you like about it and how much room you have, which will help you determine what you want to buy next.
