Planning Your DIY Model Train Table
After you have had your railroad for a little while you may consider having a go at a DIY model train table. A starting point may be for you to lay the set out an unused table or a plywood sheet. You will soon realise, however, that this has its drawbacks.
For example if you are using a table then when it comes to wiring in a set of points or some switches then you may not want to drill through the table. This is the reason why many modellers will build a DIY model train table. This means that if you have a DIY model train table then you can wire it as you wish and you can build model train scenery directly on the table.
A major part of the planning stage is to decide upon the size of your model train layout. Once you have decided on the size of the DIY model train table then you can start to plan where the scenery is going to go. From this pattern you should be able to work out which areas of your DIY model train table will need the most support and which parts may need removable flooring if you need to recover locomotives in hard to get to places such as in a tunnels. Many diy model train tables consist of a grid like system upon which the baseboard resides. This provides a strong support across the whole of the baseboard and allows you to access areas if you wish to wire in some items from underneath.
If you diy model train table is going to be quite large then you should consider, as part of your design phase, in making interlocking sections so that the table can be easily dismantled and transported. This will come in handy if you get to a situation where you may be looking to move home in which case it will be quite easy to take your diy model train table with you.
You should also consider the height at which you are to build your model railway. Once you have decided on a height then you can work out the depth that you are able to reach from a standing position. For this reason a typically diy model train table would be situated about 4 feet high. Once you have built up the scenery and like then there it may be a few inches higher yet you would still be able to reach over onto the track to recover any vehicles that may derail.
The art of building a diy model train table is really all about the planning. Once you have decided upon your layout then you can decide on how the board should fit and build accordingly. Make sure you don't build your diy model train table too big though as you may wish to move it one day!
